Fire damage vs. smoke damage — technical overview

While fire causes visible destruction, the invisible threat of smoke and soot can often be more pervasive and difficult to remediate. Soot is essentially a composition of acidic carbon particles that bond to surfaces almost instantly.

There are several types of smoke residue we encounter during mitigation:

- Dry Smoke: Resulting from high-heat, fast-burning fires. It leaves a powdery residue that is easier to clean but travels deep into crevices.

- Wet Smoke: Resulting from low-heat, smoldering fires. It is greasy, smeary, and has an intensely pungent odor that requires heavy-duty cleaning agents.

- Protein Residue: Often caused by kitchen fires. It is nearly invisible but discolors finishes and leaves a permanent odor if not treated.

Professional fire mitigation involves more than just washing walls. We use thermal fogging and hydroxyl generators to neutralize odors at the molecular level, rather than just masking them. We also implement HEPA air scrubbing to remove microscopic particles from the air column.

If you've had a fire, do not attempt to clean the soot yourself with household cleaners. The acidic nature of the soot can cause permanent etching on metal, glass, and wood finishes if the wrong chemicals are applied.
